Strip away the ideology and the showroom sticker, and the electric-versus-petrol question comes down to arithmetic — so we ran the numbers on energy, servicing, depreciation and the true cost of every kilometre ridden.
Ask whether an electric motorcycle is cheaper than a petrol one and you will get a religious war rather than an answer. The truth is duller and far more useful: it is a spreadsheet. Total cost of ownership is the sum of what you pay to buy the thing, what you feed it, what you pay to keep it running, and what you lose again when you sell it on. Only when all four of those columns are filled in does the real picture emerge — and it rarely matches either the salesman's confident pitch or the pub sceptic's equally confident certainty about batteries and bills.

Fuel Versus Electrons
This is where the electric bike begins its comeback in earnest. Electricity, bought at a domestic overnight tariff, is dramatically cheaper per kilometre than petrol almost everywhere on earth. A full charge of the SR/F's 14.4 kWh battery costs little more than a takeaway coffee at many home rates and returns up to 190 km of city riding. The equivalent distance on a thirsty petrol naked can cost three to five times as much in fuel, and every price rise at the pump widens the chasm further. The important caveat is public rapid charging, which is priced far higher than home electricity and can quietly erode much of that advantage on a long trip — so where you plug in ends up mattering almost as much as what you choose to ride. The Servicing Gulf
If fuel is where the electric bike claws back ground, servicing is where it lands the knockout blow. A combustion motorcycle is essentially a maintenance schedule with wheels attached: oil and filters, valve clearances, coolant, spark plugs, air filters, a chain that needs constant cleaning, lubing and eventual replacement, and a clutch that steadily wears. The SR/F throws almost all of that away. With a direct-drive motor, no gearbox, no clutch and a sealed belt final drive, its scheduled servicing is close to nothing beyond tyres, brake pads and fluid — and regeneration means even the brakes wear more slowly. Over five years the difference can run comfortably into the thousands, and it compounds hardest for high-mileage riders and couriers who would otherwise be booking workshop time almost every month.

These are the line items most first-time buyers forget entirely, and they can quietly swing the five-year total by a surprising margin in either direction, so they belong on the spreadsheet from the very start.

Who Actually Saves Money
The verdict depends entirely on the rider. Cover big daily miles in a city, charge at home, and keep the bike for years, and the electric machine's running-cost advantage eventually swamps its higher purchase price — often comfortably, and sooner than sceptics expect. Ride only occasionally, buy on finance, and trade up every couple of seasons, and the petrol bike's lower entry cost and stronger, better-understood resale keep it ahead throughout. There is no universal winner here, only a personal break-even point measured in kilometres, and the harder and more often you ride, the sooner the electric bike crosses it and starts genuinely saving you money. Fleet operators and delivery firms, running fixed routes at high daily mileage, tend to reach that crossover fastest of all, which is precisely why so many have already gone electric.

So which is genuinely cheaper? Whichever one matches how you actually ride, not how you imagine you might one distant summer. The petrol bike wins the showroom and the electric bike wins the long game, and the crossover point arrives sooner every year as battery prices fall and pump prices climb.
