Range Anxiety on Two Wheels: Is It Still a Dealbreaker?

Range anxiety is the reflex objection to every electric motorcycle, but a week aboard a Zero SR/F suggests the fear says far more about our petrol-era habits than about the bikes themselves.

Mention electric motorcycles in any group of riders and the same word surfaces within thirty seconds: range. It arrives before power, before price, before handling — a reflex objection so deeply ingrained that most of the people voicing it have never actually run an electric bike anywhere near flat. Range anxiety is real and worth taking seriously, but it is worth asking honestly how much of it is engineering and how much is simply the unfamiliar terror of watching a battery percentage tick down instead of trusting the fuel light we have known since we were teenagers filling a first moped.

To test the fear rather than merely repeat it, spend a genuine week commuting, shopping and blasting backroads on a Zero SR/F, and something interesting happens. The anxiety is at its sharpest on day one, fades noticeably by day three, and by the weekend has been quietly replaced by a new and slightly smug set of habits. The bike did not change over those seven days. The rider did.

What Range Anxiety Actually Is

Range anxiety is not really about distance at all; it is about uncertainty and the cost of getting the sums wrong. On a petrol bike, an empty tank means a five-minute stop at any one of a million forecourts. On an electric one, the imagined worst case is a long, undignified wait at a charger that may or may not exist and may or may not be working when you arrive. The fear is rational, but it is also wildly overweighted, because it fixates on the rare catastrophe rather than the daily reality. Most riders vastly overestimate how far they travel on a normal day, and the yawning gap between the distance we fear running out over and the distance we actually cover is exactly where the anxiety lives, and where it quietly dies once the odometer tells the truth.

The Numbers Behind the Nerves

Start with honest data rather than dread. The SR/F carries a 14.4 kWh battery and returns up to 190 km of city riding — and the average motorcycle commute in most countries is a tiny fraction of that figure. Even a keen weekend rider rarely strings together more than 150 km before wanting a coffee, a stretch of the legs and a sandwich, which is precisely the moment a charger earns its keep. The number that frightens people on paper turns out, most days, to comfortably exceed what they genuinely do in practice, and by a wide margin. The problem is that we do not buy motorcycles for most days; we buy them for the imagined epic tour, and then we let that romantic fantasy veto the eminently sensible daily commute. Manufacturers quote their range figures under favourable conditions, so a sensible buyer discounts the headline number by a fifth and plans around the realistic figure rather than the optimistic brochure one.

Why a Motorbike Is Not a Car

Motorcycles enjoy an advantage electric-car drivers can only envy: they are small, light and easy to charge almost anywhere there happens to be a socket. You cannot wheel a family SUV into a hallway, but a motorcycle battery can often be topped up from an ordinary domestic outlet in a garage, at an office, outside a favourite café or in a friend's driveway. That flexibility quietly dismantles a huge slice of the anxiety, because the bike does not depend on a sparse national network of dedicated fast chargers the way a long-range car unavoidably does. For urban and suburban riders especially, the world is already thickly covered in places to plug in — you simply have to retrain your eye to start noticing them.

The Motorway Penalty

Honesty demands the caveat, and it is a big one. Sustained high-speed motorway riding is the electric motorcycle's single weakest event, because aerodynamic drag rises with the square of speed and there is no gearbox to let the motor loaf along efficiently. Hold three-figure speeds for any length of time and the SR/F's range can roughly halve, turning a relaxed tourer into a nervy game of charger-hunting against a falling gauge. This is the genuine, non-negotiable limitation of the current technology, and anyone whose riding is mostly long-haul autoroute miles should think very hard before going electric today. For everyone whose miles are mixed, urban, or spirited but essentially local, the penalty rarely bites at all. It is the one scenario where a petrol tank and a five-minute splash of fuel still comprehensively win the argument.

  • Charge to full overnight at home before any big or unfamiliar ride
  • Ride in the bike's happy zone — town, suburbs and flowing backroads rather than flat-out motorway
  • Learn the chargers on your regular routes before you need them, not during an emergency
  • Lean on regeneration and eco modes to stretch the final, nervous kilometres when the gauge gets low

Planning Replaces Panic

The riders who thrive on electric bikes are not braver than the rest of us; they have simply swapped panic for a two-minute habit. They glance at a route, note where they could plausibly plug in, and set off unbothered. It is the same low-grade planning a sensible tourer already does with fuel stops, only without the smell of petrol left on the gloves. Modern bikes and apps now map chargers, predict remaining range against the terrain ahead, and warn the rider well before things get genuinely tight. The anxiety does not vanish because the technology has become flawless; it vanishes because the rider finally stops treating every single ride as though it were a solo crossing of a desert. After a few weeks the glance at the charging map becomes as automatic as checking the mirrors, and the dread that loomed so large on the first morning is quietly forgotten.

So, Dealbreaker or Not?

For a steadily shrinking minority — the high-mileage motorway commuters and the long-distance tourers — range remains a legitimate reason to keep burning petrol, and no honest reviewer should pretend otherwise. For everyone else, range anxiety has quietly become a habit rather than a hazard, a ghost that haunts the test ride and then disappears somewhere around the second week of ownership. The dealbreaker, increasingly, is not the battery under the seat. It is our own stubborn reluctance to change the way we think about the fuel gauge.
